Scenarios:

Knocked-Out Permanent or Adult Tooth

  • Look for your tooth and handle it carefully by the crown, not the root portion.

  • You can briefly rinse the tooth with saline or milk, but DO NOT clean it unnecessarily.

  • Check for any fractures in the tooth. If not broken, then try to reinsert it in the socket.

  • If you are incapable to reinserting the tooth, transfer it in a cup containing milk.

  • Seek for immediate dental care as it is a critical time.

  • Note: Usually, primary (baby) teeth are not replaced in the socket as it can cause damage to the permanent tooth underneath. However, an immediate checkup by an experienced dentist is recommended.

Broken Braces and Wires

  • Remove the broken appliance, if possible. If you are unable to take it out easily, cover the shape portion with wax.

  • In case there is a wire stuck in your gum, cheek, or tongue, do not remove it. Seek a dentist immediately.

Cut or Bitten Tongue, Lip or Cheek

  • Use hydrogen peroxide diluted with water (50% water & 50% hydrogen peroxide) to rinse your mouth or the injured area. You can also use warm salt water instead of hydrogen peroxide.

  • In case your lip or cheek is swollen, apply cold compresses.

  • Seek for a dentist’s help.

Toothache

  • Clean the area of the affected tooth.

  • Dislodge impacted food or debris by rinsing your mouth vigorously with warm water or dental floss.

  • DO NOT place aspirin on the aching tooth or on the gum. If your face is swollen, apply cold compresses.
